JOIN US on June 6th, 2025 AT 777 Ospika Blvd for a FREE donut to celebrate NATIONAL DONUT DAY!
In 1917, during WWI, The Salvation Army volunteers were on the front lines, providing morale through baked goods, coffee, and supplies for writing home. Canteen social “Huts” were set up in abandoned buildings, and soldiers were offered a hot drink, a sweet treat, and a taste of home—food for the body and the spirit! Ovens and stoves to cook baked goods were obviously hard to come by, so The Salvation Army ladies became known for cooking the donuts in oil inside the helmets of American soldiers. Becoming quite popular, the women who cooked these sweet treats were soon affectionately known as the “Doughnut Lassies”.
National Doughnut Day started as a fundraiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army in 1938. Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression and honour the “Lassies” of the First World War. The annual commemoration continues in the USA and Canada, with each country honouring National Doughnut Day.
To us, the doughnut represents the wide-range of social services offered by our organization, such as shelters, meals, emergency disaster relief, addiction rehabilitation, food banks, old age homes and daycares. In PG, The Salvation Army operated the main Food Bank; procuring food for the hungry is our great strength. We pick up food from all the grocery stores, sort and re-distribute it to our guests and to 50 other service agencies.
Five years ago, The Salvation Army Prince George saw fit to offer this sweet treat as a form of “Thank You” to the people of our amazing City. Today, we celebrate National Doughnut Day and the life giving work of the past, present, and future.
Join us on June 6th, 2025, and share a donut as we partner with Tim Horton’s (5th/Central, Massey, 15th/Ospika and Victoria), CKPG Today, 99.3 Rewind Radio & 101.3 The River, as we offer a doughnut to everyone who drives, or walks, up to our Church location at 777 Ospika Blvd! See you then!
