The pillars of the Kettle Campaign- A long-standing, donating and service partnerships tradition

There are many things that go into the implementation and execution of the Kettle Campaign, and these are the pillars we hold on to.

1. Standing: This term means so many things! The literal “to stand” at a Kettle location is one aspect. The “standing” tradition of Kettle Bell Ringing, since the late 1800’s, as our main fundraiser for the year, is another. But I want to focus on “standing together” in solidarity and support for those less fortunate and vulnerable; to “stand up” for those who cannot do so on their own- these are the reasons The Salvation Army exists. Since 1921, The Salvation Army has been active in Prince George, providing service to the Community in the form of helping meet their basic needs.

2. Donating- Time & Finances: Both are needed for this Campaign to thrive.
Time– A most precious commodity. Unlike finances, which can be replenished, once the clock has ticked past, there is no going back. It is not an easy task to stand at a Kettle and Ring the Bells for two hours per shift, but our faithful volunteers did just that! Donating over 2000 hours, the Bell Ringers give their hearts and their time with kindness and compassion. They shared a number of stories, such as the little kids who would see the kettle and ask mom or dad for some change. The parent would give it to the little one, who would drop it in the bucket, one coin at a time. The Bell Ringers shared the joy of seeing parents encouraging and teaching their children the timeless value of donating. Other stories of connecting with long-lost friends with whom they don’t see at other times of the year- sharing a short time with each other.
Finances– Despite the world moving away from cash, the kettles were filled with spare change from your pockets. Of course, there were bills in there, too, and I heard countless stories from Kettle Volunteers who shared how generous the community was. One donor even folded their $5 donation into a heart before putting it into the Kettle!

3. Service & Partnerships: We had kettles and tip taps out at all our grocery store partners- Save On Foods, Superstore, Walmart and Costco, as well as at Canadian Tire, Prince George Cougars and Spruce Kings hockey games, Integris Credit Union, Parker Optometry, Chieftain Auto Parts, KMS Tools and Sound Factory! Without these amazing partners, the Kettles wouldn’t be out there! Great big shout out to our partners, thank you!

This year’s Kettle Campaign was a huge success, and we owe this to the Community of Prince George! We exceeded our goal, raising a whopping $266,707!
THANK YOU PRINCE GEORGE!
